Morgan State professor, former radio host to run for delegate of District 23B

Robin Breedon of Bowie says she always tells her 15-year-old son the same thing when he complains about something.

"Don't complain about it — do something about it. That's what I've always told him," said Breedon, who is making her first run for office by challenging two-term incumbent Marvin Holmes for a delegate's seat in Annapolis from District 23B.

Holmes, a civil engineer who works in the housing industry, is deputy Majority Whip in the state House of Delegates.

"I'm not against anybody, but I just feel I have a tremendous amount to offer," Breedon said.

District 23B stretches from Route 50 south through the southern half of Bowie and along both sides of Route 301 to the town of Upper Marlboro.

"Enough is enough," said Breedon, who said she's tired of business as usual. "When do we set a standard of excellence and pull together as a county and stop accepting mediocrity?"

"I'm just so tired of having Prince George's County called the most affluent African-American county in America," when the county is also saddled with low test scores and high foreclosure rates, Breedon said.

"Let's be affluent in all areas: in education, in housing, in recreational opportunities," she said.

A 1978 communications graduate from Howard University, Breedon hosted a morning radio show from 1988 to 1992 in Washington, D.C., before hosting a show in Houston through 1996.

For the past 10 years, she has been living in Bowie and running the TV station and website for the Prince George's County School System. She also teaches journalism part time at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Although new to political campaigning, Breedon says she's not new to activism. During her years as a broadcaster, she said she organized a coat drive, helped people find jobs, worked with Prince George's County police to work with students and campaigned against domestic violence.

"I've probably got more name recognition than anybody who's ever run," she said. "People know what I stand for."

If elected, Breedon said she would also focus on improving the county's bus system. The Metro rail system works fine between Washington and commuter stations like Largo and New Carrollton — the problem is getting home from the stations.

"It might take an hour to get a bus ride back to your door that's 10 minutes from a town center," she said.

Breedon would also try to head off home foreclosures by supporting ways to reduce the amount of principal owed.

"Businesses got the bailout — why not have everybody share in the bailout?" she said. "You've have to be losing your job to get any kind of modification."

As of last week, Breedon said she has no official endorsements, although she said she's been approached by other candidates to run with them as a slate.
